New Year’s Resolutions: The year to write

The new year is upon us. 2012 approaches rapidly and will be here in just under 24 hours for me. Which means this post is a day late. Or half an hour late? Either way, I am considering this post my Friday post, because it is only just after midnight.

English: New Year's Resolutions postcardI had a busy day and for a while, wasn’t sure I would write at all.

Today, I buckled down and chose to work on my novel. It worked. Lord, how it worked.

I wrote 4,124 words in three and a half hours.

That has to be a new record or something! For me, at least.

It did lead me to realize that Tales of The Forbidden will be a bit longer than I expected, leaning more towards 90,000 words. I just started the final battle and after that, it’s just two or three more scenes and a short epilogue. That aside, I am still set on doing my damnedest to finish it by midnight on December 31st, 2011. Tomorrow. Or, today.

If I fail to finish it, I don’t expect to linger on it for more than the first week of January. At the very least, I will finish it by my birthday on January 7th. One week after 2012 begins.

That aside, resolutions have circulated this past week and it’s time for mine to join the collection. Here you go:

  1. Write more. Try my two-first-drafts-per-year method. Work on Mercy of The Forbidden while editing Tales of The Forbidden, then work on Prophecy of The Forbidden while editing Mercy of The Forbidden. Sounds simple enough.
  2. Read more. This year, the fact that I read so little horrified me. In the near-week I’ve had my Kindle, I’ve read more than I usually do in three months. I hope this is a sign that I will take the time to read more, with my new-found e-reader.
  3. Lose weight. I know a lot of people add this to their resolutions, but I need it. I won’t say how much, but I want to cut back on the junk and replace some of it with more fruit. Simple enough. Maybe start taking occasional walks. I love walking around, with no real goal in mind; it helps me think, even about my writing.

I’m sure there are other, smaller things, but these are my three main goals.

I want to be a great friend to those who mean a lot to me, to be a presence people can turn to – even people I don’t know in person, people who know me only through my blog, Twitter, Facebook, or Goodreads. I want to be more positive than I have in the past. Though I refuse to consider this a resolution, I do see it as a goal, or a guideline. Something I want to accomplish.

Enough of that, however. Do you have resolutions? If so, care to share?

Stay tuned for updates on Tales of The Forbidden. If I finish it today/tomorrow, you’ll hear about it in Sunday’s post. Same if I don’t finish it. Either way, the end is nigh.

Enjoy the rest of the year, everyone!
